Lan Newb

Talk about anything, preferably LAN related, but it doesn't have to be!

Lan Newb

Hey. I'm a hardcore gamer who plays competitively online with clans (or at least I used to, been kind of inactive lately) and I play mainly FPS games such as Quake and Call of Duty Series. Although I'm a big Starcraft fan and will be playing a lot of SC2 as well. I've never been to a lan event, in fact, I haven't been doing a lot of traveling. I've never left BC. I really want to see the gaming scene in Canada so i want to invest in going to a lan event sometime in 2011. Was wondering if you guys could offer some advice such as how much money should I save? What should I bring? Any other tips?

Thanks in advance.

Oh and I'm mainly a PC guy. Probably going to build a new PC in September :)!

This is really a very broad question, and very tough to answer without more information. At the very bottom, if there's a lan in your area all you'll need is an attendance fee and some snacks for the duration if you can bum a ride off a friend. From there, the only major costs for longer distances or longer durations are vehicle-related, lodging-related and food-related. More specific information can be given if you can tell us more about what kind of event you want to attend and how far you'll need to go (as well as your access to transportation) but generally it doesn't cost much to attend LANs ;)

If fratchwaggon has an idea, ask him if he's run it past me. If not - then it's probably not safe.

1) Make a checklist of what to bring. As yuo have never been before you need to get in the habbit of making sure you don't miss anything. Forgetting a power cord, or a mousepad is a real pain in the ass.

2) Plan how you're going to be resting. Are you sleeping at the event? Bring a sleeping bag and pillow, or something equivalent. Are you renting a room?

3) Record when the doors open and aim for that, you'll get the pick of the litter for your space, and this can be also a chance for you to learn more about how LANs work.

4) You do not have to bring your own chair, but if you really like your chair it's a good idea to bring it.
